Spiced Hot Tea

By Elizabeth Simkins

In true southern fashion, we are a family of sweet tea drinkers. While we may drink a little too much of it, nothing beats an ice cold sweet tea on a hot summer day. It’s at every holiday, event and even in the fridge most days.

I have tried all the specialty teas meant to be served hot. The fancy tea bags, flavored teas, healthy teas, you name it. But I’m just not a fan.

Then it dawned on me to just turn my favorite sweet tea hot! For Christmas, I like to serve it spiced as a special treat. Warm cinnamon and a hint of orange meets the well loved sweet tea for a warm, cozy treat.

  • Gallon sized tea bag
  • 8 cups water, split
  • 1 orange
  • 6 cinnamon sticks
  • 2 cups sugar

Now this can be made two different ways:

1- Add premade sweet tea to a large pot and add in the orange and cinnamon sticks. Bring to temperature and let it steep and simmer with the citrus and cinnamon. Serve warm.

2- Bring 4 cups of water to an almost boil. Add tea bag, cinnamon sticks and orange. Allow to steep for about 10 minutes. While it steeps, add 2 cups of sugar to the pitcher. Pour the hot tea over the top of the sugar and stir to dissolve. Fill with hot water. Serve warm.
